Wave Function
MFA Degree Show, Goldsmiths University, London 2024

The show’s title, Wave Function, refers to an equation in quantum physics that theorises the wave movement of a particle in time and space. The writer, Italio Calvino, in Six Momentos for the Next Millenium, discusses the discovery of particles by the Roman physicist and poet, Lucretius, 1AD:

“The first thing he tells us is that emptiness is just as concrete as solid bodies.”

The difficulty in comprehending nature’s energies is a central theme to Noëlle Turner’s paintings: to make visible the invisible; to make concrete inconcrete forces. Yet there is something else present in her work that goes beyond expressions of invisible particles, her vivid paintings invite contemplation of the essence of existence, woven not only within our material being but into the fabric of all our surroundings.
